Neuroses aren’t just created within individuals. The whole of society keeps us neurotic. In his book Civilisation and its Discontents (1930)， Freud wrote that a degree of repression and psychological dysfunction is simply the cost of living in a society. A non-repressive civilisation is a contradiction.
